Once ready to hatch, they break out of the egg with an egg tooth (called a “caruncle”) and move slowly up the sand until they get to the surface and then head to the water. The baby sea turtles have an egg tooth or caruncle which they use to break the eggshell, come out of the eggs and enter the water. Instead of teeth, these chelonians have strong beaks with which they bite, tear, and chew.
